When to move from open to SMART goals?
- Transition to SMART goals after 1–3 sessions, once the person has found activities they enjoy and feels ready for more direction.
- The hybrid goals serve as intermediate step: They are still open but have more structure
- The shift is not a “switch,” but a natural evolution as confidence and self-knowledge increase.

How to transition from OPEN goals to SMART goals?
- You can do this using three conversational steps:
- Reflect: “What have you discovered about what feels good or enjoyable so far?
- Focus: “What would you like to do more regularly or keep track of?”
- Specify: “How often and for how long could that realistically fit in your week?”
