  • 15-20% of all deaths
• Incidences increase with age
  • 1-3/100000 in <35 years

  • quality of nutrition, sedentary lifestyle and medical access and most of the cardiac arrests are not witnessed
  • most of the people does not know CPR

SCD in athletes

• Leading cause of death (75%) in athletes
  • 58-80% during or immediately after exertion
  • leading cause among all athletes
• Absolute incidence of SCD in athletes: low
  • Yet a lot of variability between reports!
  • Overall athletic population: 1 in 3000-1million athletes/year
  • Older > younger athletes
    • 0.47 to 1.21/100000 persons/years in young (<35)
    • 6.64/100000 person/year in older athletes (>35)
  • Male > female à 5-10:1
  • Black > white
• 1-2/100000 athletes/year (Belgium 1/100000)
